Expect No Quarter!

Lotsa players last Saturday at Hobby Haven! If the boyz weren't playing Company of Heroes, they were throwing down with WARMACHINE/HORDES! In attendance were Chicco, SJ, Kim, Tiny (Metal-mangling three games in one day), Kei (First stab at a real WMH game), Pork (Breaking in the newbies in real WMH Page 5 style), Fred, Taks, Jake, Ronald, Romy and Emp. SR3 games all around!

All games played in strict time limit and terrain rules. Fred even brought a fancy timer for the games.

Game 1 - 500 No Man's Land: Kim's Butcher of Khardov victorious over Tiny's Captain Victoria Haley
Temporal Barrier spammage does not hinder the Khadorans from pushing back Tiny's Cygnaran force. Captain Haley brought down by Man-O-War Demolition Corps Kapitan.

Game 2 - 500 No Man's Land: Tiny's Victoria Haley victorious over Taks' Major Brisbane
Tiny takes the win via victory points as the Thunderhead laid low many of Taks' infantry.

Game 3 - 500 Mosh Pit: Pork's Ashlynn D'Elysse victorious over Tiny's Captain Victoria Haley
Ashlynn's Roulette turns the tide as the Mule's Critical Devastation throws Haley's own Thunderhead crashing down over her FTW.

Game 4 - 500 Pendulum: Fred's Iron Lich Asphyxious victorious over Jake's Commander Stryker
Cygnaran warcaster Stryker falls from a hail of deadly arrows from the Lich's hired Nyss Hunters.

Game 5 - 500 Invasion: Kim's Butcher of Khardov victorious over Ronald's Master Tormentor Morghoul
Butcher wades through the Skorne horde, straight for the warlock! Game a bit dodgy because of confused terrain rules but was played through with several grains of salt.

Game 6 - 500 Killing Fields: Pork's Ashlynn D'Elysse victorious over Kei's Butcher of Khardov
Kei gets his first WMH smackdown! Mercenary warcaster Ashlynn slays Butcher with death-dealing Weapon Master plus damage boosting.

Some Warmachine/Hordes action! Tiny came over with 500pts Cygnarian cheesiness! With Arvin still on his way over, I had to get my Menoth out of the box to hopefully give Tiny a good game. Both not well versed with the rules, as well as my first time to use Feora, we kinda winged it from there. In the end, it was still fun, with lots of room for improvement the next time we play against each other.

Pat arrived just in time for Arvin to try out a 4-model Khador list. Not much to say in terms of highlights here, maybe I might add some more by gathering some post-game notes from the players.

It was a darn shame I wasnt able to go for the hat trick and play 3 gaming systems (WM/H, WOWCCG and WH40k). Sorry we weren't able to try out your new 40k list Obi. There's always next session. I knew you preferred to catch up on your WOWCCG. ;)

RHGC: How did you get into miniature wargaming?
Pork: Long time ago..... in a galaxy far....far away! Ever since high school we saw the Games Workshop ads on Dungeon magazine and wanted to start playing already but the Internet was not up yet so nobody was able to order! It was not until the early 1990's that we mail-ordered a Warhammer 40k stater box. The rest is downhill.

R: What model did you see that got you hooked?
P: The space marines! But everybody grabbed them first so I got stuck with the orks instead. Also the Ral Partha Battletech miniatures, but sadly I never had a chance to collect them. Alas! Lamentation...

R: How long have you been in the hobby?
P: Definitely more than 10 years already, but who's counting anyway?

R: What miniature wargames do you play and what armies do you currently own?
P: Space Orks from Warhammer 40K and Mercs from Warmachine! Bwahahahaha!

R: What was the first thing you bought for the hobby and where? And who was the staff then? (Evidently a dumb question since Pork was one of the promotor of the hobby locally)
P: Wat da? Once we decided to push for the orks, we started mail-ordering until our pocket money ran out! Plots were hatched, budgets ruined and love lives disappeared forever! Bwahahahahaha! Aray!



R: Why did those armies/factions?
P: Well I chose mercs to get out of the green phase in my gaming career. I mean it got to the point that everything started looking better in green shades! Argh! Something's just gotta give at that point.

R: Any future plans for a new army, whatever game system?
P: Right now I'm trying to master the art of limiting my army expansion. I just hated the fact that I needed several boxes just to get my army from point A to point B! As long as my army can fit into one case that I can take anywhere, then that is great!

R: What other stuff besides miniature wargaming are you into?
P: Duhhhhh... O yeah, I'm also into collecting Gundam models or they don't count? And expanding my DVD collection.



R: Fave model in your armies?
P: Da Beerkada! Bwahahahahahaha! The thing that I like about them is that they are all custom built from parts all over the place! And the character models in my merc army!

R: In your years of gaming, what awards and achievements in the hobby have you already won?

The HQ Choices

Chaplain (Master of Sanctity and Reclusiarch)
With instant access to a power weapon (Crozius Arcanum) and a 4+ invulnerable save (Rosarius), the Chaplains’ points increase from the Commanders is unquestionably a bargain. In addition to being Fearless and having the “Litanies of Hate” special rules, these units are the most cost-effective HQ choices among the Space Marines’ rosters points by points.



Battlefield Role:
Chaplains should never be outfitted to function as shooting units. With what they instantly have, they are meant to be close-combat specialists and that would automatically set them as counter-assault options for a static shooty army. The Chaplains’ “Litanies of Hate” is one of the best assault abilities perfect for this role and as such, always be mindful to initiate the charge against the enemy in able to capitalize on the lethal re-rolls.

To better ascertain the likelihood of getting the charge, Chaplains should be able to move quickly in the battlefield. Again, two of the most viable equipments in the Space Marines armory to give the Chaplains such mobility are the Space Marine bike and the Jump Pack. Riding a Chaplain on a Space Marine bike will increase its resilience and give it the ability to “Turbo Boost” to react against close-combat threats faster. On the other hand, the Jump Pack is a cheaper option and gives Chaplains the ability to leap over terrains and intervening models. This feat could give them a better chance for surprise attacks by hiding behind terrain pieces and jumping over them at the moment an enemy assault unit is close enough to be charged. The ability could also give the Chaplains a positional leverage on combat by leaping over an enemy assault unit and pick out from what part of that unit it is most advantageous to assault.

On foot, Chaplains are restricted in mobility. They could easily be outmaneuvered by faster enemy units so that they could not capitalize with their “Litanies of Hate”. One option for Chaplains on foot is to attach them on a Reclusiam Command Squad and mount the unit on a Rhino or a Razorback. It gives your Chaplains the protection of an armored vehicle and extra “Wounds” to spare provided by the Space Marine bodyguards. However, as mentioned on the Commanders entry, these transports have limited maneuverability and that you can’t assault after disembarking is a delay for your counter-assault momentum.

Chaplains should ought to stick with their already effective basic equipments. You can, however, acquire some of the practical choices like the imperative bolt pistol, frag grenades, or bionics. There were also other mediocre wargears to give them like the plasma pistol, Terminator Honors, master crafting, or even at greater extents, an Adamantium Mantle, but these should only be taken IF there were no other more viable things to spend your points on for the entire army. Remember too that these costly additions will also boost the Victory Points that will be awarded to your opponent once your Chaplains got destroyed.

Another thing to consider equipping a Chaplain is a Terminator Armor. However, it could only be effective when attached to a squad of Terminators and mounted on a Land Raider Crusader, where the unit could have a better chance to get that lethal charge upon disembarking. Alone, Chaplains in Terminator Armor are just another expensive fire magnet which is not worth the points invested on them.

Author’s Analysis:
If you have no specific role in mind for a Librarian or a Commander, Chaplains are no-brainer picks as HQ choices for your static shooty army. I always choose to pick a Reclusiarch over a Master of Sanctity because the 15 point difference is only substantial for the extra Wound it confers, which is not worth it. You’ll never need the extra point of Leadership that the upgrade gives since Chaplains are Fearless anyway. You can pick more valuable stuffs from the points saved this way, like Terminator Honors which complements the “Litanies of Hate” with that extra Attack it confers.

Remember that the “Litanies of Hate” is conferrable to ALL models in a squad that the Chaplain is attached to so the most efficient way to capitalize with this special rule is to attach your Chaplains to a unit that can dish out the most number of Attacks. With this concept in mind, I prefer the classic Chaplain-led Assault Squad. A full squad of this unit can immediately deliver at least thirty “To Hit” rolls on a charge, not yet including the Chaplain’s own Attacks. With “Litanies of Hate” triggered, we’re already looking at the odds that 75% of these blows will hit!

With that setup, my Reclusiarch was fitted-out with a Jump Pack, a bolt pistol, and frag grenades. If there are points to spare, I also give him bionics just for the luck-factor that it could sometimes bestow and, as I mentioned earlier, Terminator Honors. If I have to field a Chaplain unattached to a unit, I’d still pick to refit him the same way as this just for the combat flexibility and mobility of a Jump Pack-equipped character.

Some Fortress Gaming As I Saw It ;)

Went to Fortress to go pick up the new Dark Portal box Justin and I split between us. Got to play a few WOWCCG games with the regular patrons there. Here's how it turned out.

Dick in da haus! Technically his second visit to the WWS, I distinctly recall that its his first time to actually play in the WWS. He comes over with 500pts of Khadoran madness to take on all comers. Obi was the first to arrive with Warmachine to do some Page 5 gaming.

Tiny also in da haus! He also got to play a starter box game against Kim's Trollbloods using my Menites.

More Fortress Gaming!

A change of pace put more gaming on the Fortress table! Pork and Emp arrive early, while Kim and Obi arrive later on with WMH and some WOWCCG all around!

Game 1: 500 pts Assassination ~ Emp's Lylyth, Herald of Everblight defeats Pork's Ashlynn D'Elysse. Details were unclear but they said it was a caster-kill via a Carnivean!

Game 2: 500 pts Assassination ~ Emp's Lylyth, Herald of Everblight still defeats Pork's Ashlynn D'Elysse. Rematch time! But Pork still unsuccessful! Ashlynn smacked-down again via another Carnivean charge!

Game 3: 500 pts Assassination ~ Kim's Old Witch of Khador defeats Obi's Commander Adept Nemo. Manhunter MVP, holding Obi's Stormclad at bay for several turns while slowly hacking at its armor (Stormclad kept missing on 8's)! Old Witch dispatches Nemo via ninja moves, disappearing from inside Gorman's cloud and reappearing in her Murder of Crows, then charging FTW!

Game 4: 500 pts Divide and Conquer ~ Emp's Lylyth, Herald of Everblight defeats Obi's Commander Adept Nemo. My kung-fu is better than your kung-fu! Obi tries to hold back a possible Carnivean charge by putting two Stormclads in front of Nemo, but Emp counters by Slipstreaming the Carnivean into a smooth all-terrain charge up the rocky face of a hill! Nemo's footwear was what's left sticking out of that POW 18 bite!

WOWCCG: Obi's Gorebelly deftly pounds Kim's Kayleitha into submission, winning best of three games!

Dick and Joey drop by and play spectators to the games. Obi, Emp and Kim feast on Yoshinoya earlier while Pork did a ninjavanish act. COX all around! Boyz play some classic Rogue Trooper at da Shak later in the evening (and early hours of Sunday).

Fortress Friday

WMH invasion at the Fortress! Mark Dayrit shows up again after veritable weeks of inactivity! Boyz take the bar up another notch by keeping to the usual 45 - 60 minutes time limit! Joey makes an appearance with some nice "educational" stuff on his laptop!

Game 1: 500 pts Divide and Conquer ~ Arvin's Magnus the Traitor (ehem, Magnus the True Loyalist) draws against Fred's Iron Lich Asphyxious, both scoring 2 VP each (Necrotech and Skarlock for Magnus; and Trenchers for the Lich). Boyz astounded by Tartarus, rebuilding an almost-destroyed unit of Bane Thralls!

Game 2: 300 pts (starter box fight) Invasion ~ Kim's Chief Madrak Ironhide defeats Mark's Kaya Wildbourne. Kaya's yoyo trick was no enough to save the Warpwolf from being beat down by the Trollblood warbeasts. Trollblood Axer pummeled Kaya (warlock-kill) with Rush and boosted onslaught!

Game 3: 300 pts (starter box fight) No Man's Land ~ Arvin's Lylyth, Herald of Everblight defeats Mark's Kaya Wildbourne. Despite the Warpwolf unleashing hell on a pack of Shredders,
Kaya herself stood little chance against a Carnivean (warlock-kill)! Lylyth draw great attention with her fancy shooting with high RAT and Bushwhack!

Game 4: 300 pts Mosh Pit ~ Kim's Chief Madrak Ironhide (starter box) defeats Dick's Butcher of Khador. The Butcher dispatches an Impaler with ease but was brought down by a savage gangbang of boosted proportions via Madrak, the remaining Impaler and the Axer!

I will be referring to them as the bashy config, the shooty army, and the hybrid list. The bashy configuration favors the assault phase and mostly composed of units geared to have advantages in close combat. The shooty army, on the other hand, capitalizes in the shooting phase where it focuses on amassing the amount of firepower it can throw against the enemy.
